"Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them...a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. ~ Muhammed Ali
Kwanzaa is here and I am happy...I haven't really celebrated it in years, but I always make it a point to embody and embrace the 7 principles of Kwanzaa. Especially in my business and in my everyday life. The principle for the second day which is today is Kujichagulia...which in Kiswahilli means Self- determination.
As far as I can remember I have always been a determined person, no matter if it was learning how to read at age four to driving 16 hrs straight to Chicago alone this past fall. I often wondered where did this drive, this overwhelming need to succeed , originated from. I wish that I could say that I could trace this back to my grandparents but I really didn't know them all very well ( all four of my grandparents died of some form of cancer. But what I can say is that over the years I have grown more and more determined to be the person who I am destined to be. What does that mean you may ask? Well to me ,it means that I want to know without a doubt that I am truly walking in my purpose and doing what I was brought here to do.
Self determination to me is innate in everyone, I believe. I think that it needs to be poked and prodded at sometimes as it tends to get buried underneath our other skills/flaws. We have become so bombarded with what I call a microwave "I want it now" society, that I think the skills we once thrived on have now fallen prey to apathy and laziness. Like Muhammad Ali said in the quote above, "The will must be stronger than the skill." I can honestly say that my will to succeed has never been as imperative as it is right now. I want to see the fruits of my labor, I want to revel in how my desire ( my will) outshined my skills and give birth to my greatness.
Self determination will separate you from the dreamers who just talk, it will ensure you the foresight to go after your dreams and visions. It is the catalyst that will make you see things through until the end. "Where there is a will, there is a way." Self determination has become my new favorite among the Kwanzaa principles. I will succeed at everything that I exert my will on. Watch me !
