I've been meaning to blog about this amazing health tool for awhile now, but you know how life and things get in the way. But I couldn't keep this a secret any longer. I love my Bed of Nails Mat! I have been using it daily for about two weeks now and occasionally off and on for about 6 months. I know the name suggests some real kind of torture chamber type induced pain, but I can assure you that that is far from the truth.
I acquired my Bed of Nails Mat from a Groupon deal and I was intrigued by the concept. I have had acupuncture treatments done to me before and I really like the effects it had on my health and my body. I saw the Bed of Nails as an opportunity of receiving a similar type treatment in the comforts of my own home.
Before I placed my order, I goggled the company to see what was the energy behind this product. The first thing that struck me was that Dr. Oz endorsed this product and it's sister product ( the Bed of Nails pillow) on his show! Now don't get me wrong I'm not a Dr. Oz fanatic but I do like how he infuses complimentary health practices( I don't like the term alternative health) with his traditional (allopathic) medical practices. So in my mind I thought "If it's good for Dr. Oz, then it's Great for me". *giggle*
This bed of nails is not like the one pictured above that you are used to seeing as a stunt at county fairs and in variety shows. Many don't know that this object came from ancient Indian mysticism and has been around for over hundreds of years! The Indians knew of the healing properties of this modality before it became a profitable side show stunt. This mat is based on the similar premise and gives us a modern day spin on an ancient healing technique.
I'm demonstrating how I use the mat..
Benefits of the mat:
According to the website www.bedofnails.org the mat helps to release toxins in the body and it works under the same principles of acupuncture. The "nails" help to release endorphins which are your personal "feel good or happiness drug" produced by your body. Your endorphins are what helps you to relax and remain calm....and who doesn't need that these days with all that's going on in the world?
It says on the website that: "If used regularly for a long period of time (the mat) may alleviate:
So how does one use it you may be asking?
They suggest that you start out using the mat for ten minutes daily and preferably nude ( as you can see I'm not nude in this pic...smile). Being nude helps the discs of spikes to stimulate the skin to release the endorphins. Some people (me included) experience a 'stinging sensation from the skin being stimulated but with use it will dissipate. They said that the stinging should feel like a "good hurt", which is one of my favorite oxymorons. You can wear a thin tshirt of item made of thin material like I am in the pic that can act as a slight barrier to decrease the intensity. I will work my way to being "nude" on it so that I can experience the full affects.
My experiences with the mat so far have been amazing....I feel less pain in my lower back and I often fall asleep while on it. I plan to incorporate it into my yoga practice, as I saw somewhere online that some yogis actually do some postures on it. I plan to use for my ending meditation when I am in mummy pose ( savasana for you traditional yoga heads) . I average about 10 to 15 minutes each session, and I normally listen to some binaural beats ( I will write a blog about that soon) or some other type of meditative music ( shout out to pandora..I love that application on my phone). I do plan to get one of the bed of nails pillows to use with my massage clients and maybe invest in a few more mats for my yoga classes. I can see how this tool can enhance both of those areas.
If you are looking for a reasonably inexpensive and effective stress relief tool, the Bed of nails mat is definitely a great buy! I highly recommend it and I can't wait to see the full results. I recently started resting my feet on it and I felt invigorated! So if you have a job where you are on your feet all day, this is a must have! You can even use it as a back rest for your office chair...great for those of you who have desk jobs.
Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and get one or a few of these mats and or pillows for your home and your office. Incorporate this tool into your wellness regimen. You can never have too many tools in your wellness toolbox. Thank me later!
