In my role as a massage therapist and certified holistic health practitioner, I am often asked about dietary supplements and what are good ones to take, how long should they be taken and why. I inform my clients that there isn't a simple answer to that question, nor is there a simple approach. Each and every person is different. The supplement that works for you may not be the supplement that works for your friend or family member. Individual consultations are often required to ensure the proper supplement is recommended for the present circumstances.
Supplements are understood to be vitamins, herbs, tinctures, herbal extracts, juices and etc that are taken to "supplement" any deficiencies that may be occurring in the current diet. However, the FDA considers supplements to be foods not drugs. Every product that is considered to be a supplement must be labeled as such and must provide "supplement facts" on the bottle. Your physician may "prescribe" you a supplement for example like vitamin C for fighting a cold, and when that is done a supplement is considered as a drug as it was "prescribed" to you by a medical doctor.
Please note that as a certified holistic health practitioner, I can only "suggest" a supplement to you. I can't recommend dosage amounts, as this would be considered as "prescribing" and being that I am not an M.D. this is out of my scope of practice.
To decide whether or not you need to supplement your current diet, you need to take a good look at your food choices. A very good resource to use to find out about the nutritional values of your foods is www.mypyramid.gov. Go to the link that says Dietary guidelines and you can see where your current diet stands against the suggested dietary guidelines for the average person.
Once you get an idea of how your diet stacks up, then you can make a very good informed decision on idea of supplementing your diet.
In these days in times, I recommend that everyone including children should take a very good multi-vitamin as the standard american diet (SAD) is filled with processed and devitalized food choices. There are so many causes for unhealthy eating habits. But we have so many resources now to assist us in making healthier choices. My company ItWorks Global offers a great line of supplements to include an awesome Mutli-vitamin called ITSVITAL that is revolutionizing the market.
By ensuring that you eat a variety of nutritious foods, there is a really good chance that you are getting all the adequate essential nutrients that you need. Just know that if you are not that there on the better eating scale, that taking supplements is no magic trick. You should never use supplements to totally disregard the fact that you must eat real live food in order to receive the nutrients you need for your body to work properly.
